UPI Credit Card Payment Charges Explained
UPI has changed how Indians move money, and over the past few years it has expanded into the credit card world too. Today, two distinct UPI use cases involve credit cards. The first is paying a credit card bill from any bank account using UPI, where the credit card is the destination. The second is using a credit card itself as a UPI funding instrument, primarily through RuPay credit cards linked to UPI handles. Each case has different charges and rules, and confusion about the two is common. This guide separates the two flows clearly and explains who pays what.
Use Case One: UPI to Pay a Credit Card Bill
In this flow, the cardholder uses a UPI app to pay the credit card bill, with the source being a savings account at any bank and the destination being the credit card account. This is treated as a regular bill payment under the Bharat BillPay or merchant category, and most issuing banks today accept UPI based credit card bill payments through their own apps as well as third party UPI apps.
Charges for the User on UPI Bill Payment
For the cardholder, UPI based credit card bill payment is generally free. There is no surcharge or convenience fee deducted from the savings account in addition to the bill amount when the payment is made through a standard UPI flow. Some third party apps may charge a small convenience fee on debit card or wallet based bill payments, but the UPI route itself is typically zero cost for the user.
Charges for the Merchant or Biller
Behind the scenes, the issuing bank pays a small interchange and routing fee to the UPI payment service provider. These costs are absorbed by the bank and not passed on to the cardholder. From the user's perspective, there is no visible charge.
Use Case Two: RuPay Credit Card on UPI
This is the newer, more discussed flow. RuPay credit cards can be linked to a UPI handle, after which they can be used to pay merchants directly via UPI by scanning a QR code or selecting a payee. The merchant receives the payment as if it were any other UPI transaction, and the amount is added to the credit card bill, just like a regular swipe.
Merchant Discount Rate on RuPay Credit Card UPI
For merchants, RuPay credit card on UPI transactions attract a Merchant Discount Rate, similar to a regular credit card swipe. The exact rate depends on the merchant category and is paid by the merchant, not the user. Small merchants below a defined annual turnover threshold are typically exempt, in line with the published rules. The cardholder is not charged any additional fee for using the RuPay credit card on UPI for merchant payments.
Reward Points and Interest Free Period
When a RuPay credit card is used on UPI for merchant payments, transactions usually earn reward points or cashback as per the card's standard reward structure, although certain categories may be excluded. The transaction enters the regular billing cycle and enjoys the standard interest free period until the due date, after which interest applies on any unpaid balance.
Categories With Restrictions or Higher Charges
Some categories, such as fuel, government payments, utility bills, education fees, and wallet load transactions, may have specific rules. Convenience fees or surcharges may apply on these merchant categories regardless of payment method. The merchant or biller will display any such fee before the transaction is confirmed.
What to Watch for as a User
For credit card bill payments via UPI, you should not see any charge on the savings account beyond the bill amount itself. For RuPay credit card on UPI merchant transactions, no surcharge is added to the bill in the standard flow, although the credit card bill will reflect the same amount that was paid to the merchant. Always check the confirmation screen on the UPI app for any displayed fee before authorising the transaction.
Disputes and Reversals
Disputes on UPI based credit card bill payments are handled through the UPI app's complaint flow and the issuing bank's customer care, with reference to the transaction reference number. RuPay credit card on UPI disputes are handled like regular credit card disputes through the issuing bank, with the same chargeback rights as a swipe transaction. Always retain the transaction reference number until the entry is reconciled.
Tips for Cost Effective UPI Use
Use UPI for credit card bill payments to avoid late fees and to enjoy a fast, free user side experience. Use RuPay credit card on UPI for merchants who do not normally accept credit cards but accept UPI, especially when you want to enjoy reward points and the interest free period. Avoid using credit cards on UPI for cash like transactions or wallet loads where reward exclusions and special charges may apply.
