Paying Credit Card Bill via PhonePe: Is There a Limit?
PhonePe is one of the most widely used UPI apps in India, and it is a popular choice for credit card bill payments because the credit card biller flow is fast and built around the BharatBillPay rails. A common question among new users, however, is whether there is a limit on how much can be paid in a single transaction or in a single day. The short answer is yes, limits do apply, and understanding them helps avoid last minute surprises near the due date.
Where the limits come from
Paying a credit card bill on PhonePe is essentially a UPI transaction with a credit card biller as the beneficiary. The limits, therefore, follow the rules set by the National Payments Corporation of India for UPI personal payments, the rules set by the bank that issues the linked account, and any additional thresholds that PhonePe applies on its own platform for risk reasons. The lowest of these three values is the effective limit on any given transaction.
Per transaction caps
The National Payments Corporation of India has historically allowed UPI personal payments up to a defined per transaction cap, with higher caps for select categories such as capital markets, insurance, and certain government payments. For routine credit card bills, the standard personal payment cap applies. For most users, this cap is comfortably above a single month's credit card bill, but a one-off large bill may need to be split into more than one transaction.
Per day limits
In addition to the per transaction cap, the platform applies a per day limit on the total amount that can be sent through UPI from a single account. This is a security measure that protects you against any device being misused. If you have already used a part of the daily limit for groceries, fuel, or peer to peer transfers, the residual capacity is what is available for the credit card bill payment.
Bank specific caps
The bank that issues your linked savings or current account is allowed to set a stricter cap than the national rule. Some banks allow the full national amount, while others choose a smaller daily ceiling for UPI. The cap may also vary based on the type of account and the customer profile. To check the exact value, look at the personal banking section of your bank's app or website, or ask the customer service team.
New customer thresholds
If you have just registered on PhonePe, or if you have only recently linked the bank account, the platform may apply a lower threshold for the first few days as a fraud control measure. After the cooling period, the limit returns to the standard value. This is not a permanent restriction, but it can catch first time users by surprise during their first credit card bill payment on the app.
How to pay a bill that is larger than the limit
If the bill amount is higher than the available per transaction cap, split the payment into more than one transaction. Each transaction generates its own reference number, and each reduces the credit card outstanding by the corresponding amount. If you are also bumping into the per day limit, complete one part on the current day and the rest on the next day, but make sure that the second part is paid well before the due date so that the cycle is not marked late. You can also pay the credit card bill on Stashfin in a single tap if the bill is too large for UPI alone.
Reading the on screen warnings
When you initiate a payment that approaches a limit, PhonePe normally shows a warning that explains the cap and offers to reduce the amount or to split the payment. Read these warnings carefully and act on them rather than ignoring them, since a payment that exceeds the cap will fail outright and may not auto retry.
Practical tips
Keep a buffer of one or two days before the due date when paying a large bill, so that even if you have to split the payment across two days, the cycle does not slip into late status. Track your daily limit usage during peak shopping months, when bills are likely to be higher than usual. Consider keeping more than one bank account linked to PhonePe, so that you can switch the funding source if one daily limit is exhausted.
