Paying Credit Card Bill via RTGS: When to Use It?

Real Time Gross Settlement, often shortened to RTGS, is one of the oldest electronic funds transfer systems in India and is designed specifically for high value, time-sensitive transfers. While most credit card bills are settled through unified payments interface, biller flows, or the national funds transfer system, RTGS remains a useful option for very large bills, for corporate credit cards, and for cardholders who want a direct, point to point settlement without intermediate routing.

What RTGS is and why it exists

RTGS settles each transaction individually and immediately, on a one to one basis between the sending bank and the receiving bank. This is different from systems that batch transactions before they settle. The advantage is that once the transfer is initiated and accepted, it cannot be reversed and it is final on the receiving side. RTGS is usually positioned for large amounts and for situations where batch delays are unacceptable. Its threshold for high value transactions and its operating windows are set by the regulator and updated from time to time.

When RTGS is the right choice for a credit card bill

RTGS is the right choice in three situations. The first is a very large credit card bill that exceeds typical online limits or where you want to avoid splitting the payment. The second is a corporate credit card bill, where the company wants a direct, traceable transfer with a clear remittance reference. The third is a time-sensitive payment near the end of the cycle, where you want the credit card account to receive the credit on the same working day without batch wait times.

How RTGS differs from biller and unified payments interface flows

A biller flow uses the credit card biller registered on the Bharat BillPay system and routes the payment through that ecosystem. Unified payments interface uses your linked bank account and the credit card biller in a single tap. RTGS, by contrast, is a direct funds transfer to the credit card account number designated by the issuer. The receiving bank applies the funds to the credit card account based on the reference field, which makes the reference field the single most important detail of an RTGS credit card payment.

Information you need before initiating an RTGS payment

Keep your sixteen-digit credit card number ready, since it must be entered in the reference field of the RTGS instruction. Know the credit card account number to be used as the beneficiary, which is shown on the credit card statement and on the official issuer website. Note the bank branch identifier of the beneficiary, often called the Indian Financial System Code, which is also displayed on the same page. Confirm the operating window for RTGS on the chosen day, since transfers initiated outside this window are queued for the next available slot.

Steps to initiate the RTGS payment

Log in to net banking of the bank that holds your savings or current account. Add a new beneficiary using the credit card account number, the Indian Financial System Code, and the beneficiary name as shown on the issuer website. The first registration involves a cooling period and a one-time password verification, after which the beneficiary becomes active. Initiate an RTGS transfer to this beneficiary for the amount you want to pay, and enter your sixteen-digit credit card number in the remarks or reference field. Submit and authorise the transaction with the one-time password.

Timing and confirmation

Once the transfer is accepted, the sending bank assigns a unique transaction reference. The amount is debited from your savings or current account immediately, and the receiving bank applies the credit to the credit card account based on the reference field. For most issuers, the credit reflects within a few minutes during the operating window. Save the transaction reference, since it is the single most useful piece of information for any later follow-up.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is omitting the credit card number from the reference field, which can delay the credit because the receiving bank cannot match the funds to a card automatically. The second is using the wrong beneficiary name or branch identifier, especially for issuers with multiple settlement accounts for different card variants. Always copy the details directly from the credit card statement or the issuer's official credit card payment page, not from a search result.

Backup option for very tight timelines

If you are running short on time and the RTGS window has not yet opened, do not panic. You can also pay your credit card bill on Stashfin in a single tap, which uses the regular biller flow and posts the credit on the card within minutes. This avoids any cycle slipping into late status while you wait for the next available RTGS window.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about this topic.

RTGS is most useful for very large bills, for corporate credit cards, and for time-sensitive payments where you want a direct settlement to the credit card account on the same working day. For smaller routine bills, the biller flow or unified payments interface is generally faster and simpler.
