How to Pay Credit Card Bill Via NACH Mandate
NACH stands for the National Automated Clearing House, a centralised system operated under the National Payments Corporation of India that enables bulk and recurring electronic payments. For credit card holders, a NACH mandate allows the issuing bank to automatically debit the registered savings or current account on a fixed date each month for the credit card bill, without any manual action. This is one of the most reliable ways to ensure that the bill is paid on time and the interest free period is preserved.
What a NACH Mandate Actually Is
A NACH mandate is an electronic instruction that the cardholder signs in favour of the issuing bank, authorising regular debits from a specified bank account up to a defined maximum amount. The mandate captures the source bank account, the beneficiary, the maximum debit amount, the start and end dates, and the frequency of debits. Once registered, the issuing bank submits the credit card bill amount to the source bank for debit on the chosen date every month.
Why Cardholders Use NACH for Credit Card Bills
The biggest advantage is automation. The bill is paid on or before the due date without any manual reminder, app login, or password entry. This eliminates late fees, protects the credit score, and preserves the interest free period for new purchases. NACH mandates are also useful for users who travel frequently or who prefer to keep one or two cards on full auto debit while managing the rest manually.
Setting Up a NACH Mandate
There are two common ways to set up the mandate. The first is through the issuing bank's mobile app or net banking, where you choose the credit card, enable auto pay, select either the total amount due or the minimum amount due, and authorise the mandate using OTP and net banking credentials of the source bank. The second is through a physical NACH form, where you fill in the source account details, the maximum amount, and the validity period, and submit it to the issuing bank for processing.
Choosing the Debit Amount
Most NACH mandates for credit card bills offer two options. Total amount due means the entire bill is debited every month, which is the recommended choice since it preserves the interest free period. Minimum amount due means only the minimum required to keep the account active is debited, which leaves a revolving balance and continues to attract interest. Some banks also support a custom fixed amount, useful for users who want a predictable monthly debit.
Choosing the Maximum Cap
NACH mandates always specify a maximum amount per debit. Set this cap a little higher than your typical monthly bill so that even if a particular month's bill is unusually large, the auto debit goes through. If the bill exceeds the cap, the mandate is rejected and you will need to pay manually before the due date.
Modifying or Cancelling a Mandate
You can modify the source account, the maximum amount, the chosen debit option, or the validity period through the bank's mobile app, net banking, or a written request. Cancellation is also available through similar channels. Cancellation usually takes effect from the next billing cycle, so any debit already scheduled may still go through. Always confirm the cancellation in writing and check the next statement to ensure that no further auto debits occur.
Charges Associated With NACH
Setting up and running a standard NACH mandate is usually free for credit card bill payments. However, if the source account does not have sufficient balance on the debit date, the bank may charge a return or bounce fee, similar to a cheque return charge. The credit card account may also attract a late fee and interest if the auto debit fails and the bill is not paid by another channel before the due date.
Protections Under NPCI Rules
NACH operates under NPCI rules, which include defined dispute and refund processes. Cardholders are entitled to a clear mandate confirmation, advance notification of upcoming debits in many cases, and the right to cancel the mandate. If a debit is unauthorised or incorrectly executed, you can raise a dispute with the source bank, the issuing bank, or NPCI through the bank's grievance channel.
Best Practices for a Smooth Auto Debit
Keep the source account funded a couple of days before the scheduled debit date, especially if your salary credit varies. Monitor the SMS alerts that come both before and after the debit. Review the credit card statement every month to confirm that the auto debit was for the correct amount. If the bill is unusually high, top up the source account or pay the excess manually to avoid a NACH return.
