How to Pay Co-Branded Credit Card Bills
A co-branded credit card is a card issued jointly by a bank and a partner brand, such as an airline, hotel chain, e-commerce platform, retailer, or fintech. It carries the bank as the regulated issuer and the brand as the loyalty or rewards partner. Cardholders often enjoy enhanced reward points, milestone benefits, and category specific perks. While the value proposition is attractive, paying a co-branded credit card bill can sometimes feel confusing because the partner brand is more visible than the issuing bank. This guide explains how co-branded card billing works and how to pay your bill through the right channels.
Understanding Who the Real Issuer Is
The most important thing to know about a co-branded card is that the issuing bank, not the partner brand, is the regulated entity responsible for the card account. The brand provides the rewards and the marketing identity, but the bill is generated, settled, and reported to credit bureaus by the bank. The brand's name on the card is for recognition and loyalty, not for billing. When you pay the bill, the destination is always the issuing bank's credit card account.
Find the Issuer Name on the Card and Statement
Look at the card itself, the welcome kit, and the statement to identify the issuing bank. The bank's name is usually printed on the front or back of the card and appears clearly on the statement header. Knowing the issuer is essential because most payment channels ask you to select the bank from a list of credit card billers, regardless of which brand the card is co-branded with.
Pay Through the Issuing Bank's Net Banking or Mobile App
The most direct way to pay is through the issuing bank's net banking or mobile banking app. Log in, locate the credit card section, and select the co-branded card to view the latest statement, total amount due, minimum amount due, and due date. Pay using a linked savings account, UPI, or a debit card. Payments from the issuing bank's own savings account usually reflect almost immediately on the card.
Pay Using UPI From Any Bank Account
UPI is one of the simplest ways to pay any credit card bill, including co-branded cards. Open any UPI app, choose credit card bill payment, search for the issuing bank, enter the sixteen digit credit card number and registered mobile number, and authorise with your UPI PIN. The amount is debited from your linked savings account at any bank and posted against the credit card account. The brand name does not appear in this flow, but the credit lands correctly on the co-branded card.
Pay Through the Partner Brand's App or Portal
Some co-branded cards have a dedicated portal or app section managed by the partner brand, where the cardholder can view rewards, redemption options, and sometimes initiate a bill payment. In most cases, the bill payment inside the partner app is routed to the issuing bank's payment system in the background. The partner app is convenient for users who already use the brand's ecosystem regularly.
Pay Through NEFT, RTGS, or BBPS
NEFT, RTGS, and BBPS work for co-branded cards exactly as they do for regular cards. Use the sixteen digit card number as the account number with the issuing bank's standard credit card IFSC code for NEFT and RTGS, or select the issuing bank as the biller in any BBPS enabled app. These channels are particularly useful when the partner app's bill payment flow is unavailable or when you prefer to pay from another bank.
Reward Points and Bill Payment
Unlike payments to merchants, the bill payment itself usually does not earn reward points. Reward points are earned on spends made using the co-branded card, not on bill repayments. Some cards allow you to redeem accumulated reward points or partner currency, such as airline miles, hotel points, or platform credits, against the bill. Where supported, this option is usually available inside the partner app or the bank's reward redemption portal.
Watch the Due Date and Statement Date
The statement and due date on a co-branded card follow the issuing bank's billing cycle, even though the rewards are linked to the partner brand. Late payments attract interest and late fees from the bank, while reward earning may also be paused or reduced for delinquent accounts. Treat the bill with the same discipline as any other credit card bill.
Common Issues and How to Resolve Them
If the bill is not visible inside the partner app, check the issuing bank's app or net banking portal directly. If a payment is made through the partner app but the credit card statement does not reflect it within one working day, contact the issuing bank's customer care with the transaction reference number, since the bank, not the brand, controls the actual card account. Disputes on transactions and interest charges are also handled by the issuing bank.
