How to Pay the Bill on a Blocked Credit Card

A blocked credit card can be alarming, especially when there is an outstanding bill that still needs to be cleared. The block stops the card from being used for new transactions, but it does not erase the existing balance. Whether the card was blocked by you, by the issuing bank as a security measure, or because of a missed payment, the dues continue to attract interest and late fees until they are settled. Knowing how to pay the bill on a blocked card and how to handle the unblocking process is essential to protect your credit profile.

Why a Credit Card Gets Blocked

There are several common reasons. The cardholder may have requested a temporary block after losing the card or noticing suspicious activity. The bank may have placed a block due to unusual transactions, repeated incorrect PIN attempts, or fraud risk flags. The card can also be blocked because of late payments, an account that has crossed the credit limit, or inactivity for an extended period. In each case, the underlying credit card account remains active in the bank's records and continues to generate statements.

The Bill Does Not Disappear

A block on the plastic card is a transactional control, not a closure of the account. The outstanding balance, accrued interest, fees, and any unbilled transactions still need to be paid. Ignoring the bill can lead to additional late fees, higher interest, and adverse entries on your credit bureau report, which can affect future loan and card applications.

Confirm the Outstanding Amount

The first step is to confirm exactly how much is owed. Log in to the issuing bank's mobile app, net banking portal, or call customer care to request the latest statement. The block on the card does not prevent you from viewing the statement or initiating a payment toward the account. Compare the closing balance against any payments already made and note the due date.

Pay Through UPI Using the Card Number

UPI bill payment continues to work even when the plastic card is blocked, because the payment is routed using the sixteen digit credit card account number rather than the active status of the card. Open any UPI app, choose credit card bill payment, select the issuing bank, enter the card number and registered mobile, and authorise the transaction. The payment is debited from your linked savings account and credited to the card account.

Pay Through NEFT or RTGS From Any Bank

NEFT and RTGS are reliable channels for blocked card dues. Log in to your own bank, add the credit card as a beneficiary using the sixteen digit card number as the account number and the issuing bank's standard credit card IFSC code, and transfer the bill amount. The card's blocked status does not affect inbound credits to the account.

Pay Through the Issuing Bank's Net Banking or Mobile App

Most issuing banks display all your active and blocked cards inside the mobile banking app and net banking portal. Tap the card, view the statement, and pay using a linked savings account, debit card, or UPI. The bank also allows payment through Bharat BillPay inside the app, with the sixteen digit card number as the identifier.

Pay at the Branch

If digital channels are not accessible, the issuing bank's branch will accept a cheque drop or cash deposit toward the credit card account. Write the credit card number and registered mobile number on the back of the cheque or on the deposit slip. Cash payments may attract a small service fee, which the bank communicates at the counter.

Unblocking the Card After Payment

If the block was placed due to a missed payment, settling the dues is usually the trigger for the bank to consider unblocking the card. Contact customer care or visit a branch with proof of payment and request unblocking. Where the block was placed for fraud or security reasons, the bank may instead reissue a fresh card with a new number and CVV. If the block was self requested due to a lost card, the bank will dispatch a replacement after the dues are settled.

Protect Your Credit Score

Unpaid balances on a blocked card can damage your credit score, since the account stays in a delinquent status until cleared. Pay the outstanding amount as soon as possible, retain the transaction reference number, and check your credit report after a few weeks to confirm that the account is reported correctly. If a late fee was applied due to a bank side issue, request a waiver in writing.

Watch for Fraudulent Calls

Blocked card incidents often attract fraudsters who pose as bank representatives and ask for OTPs or card details on the pretext of unblocking the card. Banks never ask for OTPs over a phone call. Always use the official customer care number from the back of the card, the bank's website, or the mobile banking app rather than responding to unsolicited calls or links.
