How to Setup UPI on an iPad or Tablet
Why UPI Setup on Tablets Is Not Straightforward
UPI is fundamentally built around mobile number verification through SMS. This creates a dependency on SIM-enabled devices. Tablets and iPads, especially Wi-Fi-only versions, do not support SMS-based authentication, which makes direct setup challenging. This is not a limitation of the app but a core design decision in the UPI system.
How UPI Verification Works at a System Level
During setup, UPI apps send an SMS from the registered mobile number to validate ownership of the bank account. This process ensures that the user has control over the number linked to the bank. Without this step, the system cannot establish trust, which is why devices without SIM capability cannot complete setup independently.
Workaround Using a Primary Smartphone
In most real-world scenarios, users set up UPI on a smartphone first. Once verification is complete, some apps allow login on secondary devices such as tablets. However, functionality may vary. While users can view transaction history or manage certain settings, initiating transactions may still require the primary device.
Real-World Usage Scenarios for Tablets
Tablets are often used for business dashboards, monitoring transactions, or managing accounts. For example, a business owner may use a tablet to track incoming payments while relying on a phone to approve transactions. This hybrid usage reflects how UPI currently supports multi-device environments.
Limitations Users Should Clearly Understand
Devices without SIM support cannot independently verify UPI accounts. Even on SIM-enabled tablets, configuration issues may arise if the SIM is not set as the default for SMS. Additionally, security policies may restrict full functionality on secondary devices to prevent misuse.
Best Practices for Using UPI Across Devices
Always maintain an active smartphone as the primary UPI device. Use tablets for viewing or monitoring rather than initiating payments. Ensure the registered mobile number remains active and accessible, as it is central to authentication and recovery processes.
Future Possibilities for Multi-Device UPI Access
As authentication technologies evolve, there may be support for alternative verification methods that reduce dependency on SMS. This could enable more flexible multi-device usage in the future, but currently, the system remains tightly coupled with mobile-based verification.
