Paying Credit Card Bill for Expired Cards

An expired credit card does not mean an expired credit card account. Many cardholders assume that once the printed expiry date passes, the card is closed and the outstanding balance is somehow written off. That is a common misconception. The card account remains active in the bank's records until it is formally closed, and any outstanding bill, interest, fees, and dues continue to attract repayment obligations. Understanding how to settle a bill on an expired card is essential to protect your credit score and avoid unnecessary penalties.

Why Bills Continue After a Card Expires

A credit card has two distinct identifiers. The plastic card carries an expiry date that limits when it can be physically swiped or used online. The credit card account behind it, however, lives on in the bank's core banking system as long as there is a balance, an active relationship, or a pending dispute. Until you formally close the account and the bank confirms a zero balance, every unpaid statement continues to generate interest, late fees, and entries on your credit bureau report.

Check the Outstanding Balance Before Paying

The first step is to confirm exactly how much is owed. Log in to the issuing bank's mobile app, net banking portal, or call customer care to request the latest statement. Compare the closing balance against any payments already made. This number, including any newly applied interest or late fees, is what you need to clear. Avoid paying a rough estimate, since underpayment may continue to trigger interest while overpayment can take days to refund.

Pay Through UPI Using the Card Number

UPI bill payment continues to work even after a card expires, because the payment is routed using the sixteen digit credit card account number, not the expiry date on the plastic. Open any UPI app, choose credit card bill payment, select your bank, enter the card number and registered mobile, and approve the transaction. The payment is debited from your linked savings account and posted against the credit card account.

Use NEFT or RTGS From Any Bank Account

NEFT and RTGS are reliable channels for paying bills on expired cards. Log in to your own bank, add the credit card as a beneficiary using the sixteen digit card number as the account number and the issuing bank's standard credit card IFSC code, and transfer the outstanding amount. The card's expiry date is irrelevant for this method, since fund transfers operate on the account number alone.

Pay Through the Issuing Bank's Mobile App or Net Banking

Most issuing banks display all your active and recently expired cards inside the mobile banking app. Tap the card, view the statement, and pay using a linked savings account, debit card, or UPI. Net banking offers the same flow on a desktop. The expired card itself is not used as a payment instrument here, only as a payment destination.

Visit the Branch for Cheque or Cash Payment

If digital channels are not accessible, the issuing bank's branch will accept a cheque drop or cash deposit toward the credit card account. Write the credit card number and registered mobile number on the back of the cheque or on the deposit slip. Cash payments may attract a service fee, which the bank will communicate at the counter.

Request a Card Reissue If You Want to Continue

If you intend to keep using the credit line, contact the bank to request a reissued card. Reissue is typically initiated automatically before expiry, but if you missed it or the card is already expired, the bank can dispatch a fresh plastic with the same account number or a new one. Clearing the outstanding bill before reissue is recommended, since unpaid balances can delay or block the reissue process.

Confirm Closure If You No Longer Want the Card

If you do not want to continue with the card, pay the outstanding balance in full and submit a formal closure request. Ask for a written confirmation that the account has been closed and the balance is zero. Without this confirmation, you may continue to receive statements, annual fees, or service charges that quietly damage your credit profile.

Protect Your Credit Score During the Process

Missing or delaying a payment on an expired card has the same impact on your credit score as missing a payment on an active card. Late payments are reported to credit bureaus, late fees compound the balance, and the account can move into a delinquent status. Settle the bill as soon as possible, retain the transaction reference number, and verify the closure by checking your credit report a few weeks after the final payment.
