How to Get Credit Card Bill Payment Receipt Online

Every credit card bill payment you make generates some form of acknowledgement — a digital trail that confirms the transaction occurred, when it occurred, and for how much. This acknowledgement goes by different names depending on where the payment was made: a transaction reference number in a UPI app, a BBPS acknowledgement number in a bill payment platform, a payment confirmation email from your bank, or a downloadable receipt within a mobile banking app. Understanding where each type of receipt lives and how to retrieve it is a practical skill that every credit card holder should have.

This guide covers the primary payment channels used by Indian credit card holders and explains exactly where to find proof of payment in each case.

Why a payment receipt matters

The most common reason cardholders need a payment receipt is to resolve a dispute — when a payment has been debited from the bank account but has not reflected on the credit card account. In this situation, the transaction reference number or BBPS acknowledgement number from the payment confirmation is the key piece of information your bank or payment platform needs to trace the payment and apply it correctly.

Receipts are also useful for personal record-keeping, for reconciling your bank account statement against your credit card account, for income tax purposes if you are documenting financial activity, and as proof of timely payment if you ever need to dispute a late payment fee that was incorrectly applied due to a processing delay.

Payment receipt from UPI apps — Google Pay, PhonePe, and similar platforms

For payments made through UPI-based apps, the payment receipt takes the form of a transaction confirmation screen displayed immediately after the payment is processed, followed by a history entry in the app.

In Google Pay, open the app and navigate to the transaction history or payment history section, typically accessible from the home screen by tapping on the payment you want to retrieve. Each completed transaction shows the payment amount, the recipient biller name, the date and time, and a UPI transaction ID — also called the UPI reference number. This transaction ID is your primary proof of payment for UPI transactions. Screenshot this screen or share it to your preferred storage location. Google Pay also allows you to view transaction details and in some cases download a payment receipt PDF directly from the transaction detail screen.

In PhonePe, the process is identical in structure. Open the app, navigate to History from the home screen, find the relevant credit card bill payment, and tap on it to see the full transaction details including the PhonePe transaction ID and UPI reference number. PhonePe displays a transaction confirmation screen with all relevant details that can be screenshotted or shared.

For both apps, a transaction confirmation SMS is sent to your registered mobile number at the time of payment, which serves as an informal but widely accepted proof of payment in most bank dispute processes.

Payment receipt from Paytm

Paytm generates both a UPI transaction reference and a BBPS acknowledgement number for credit card bill payments processed through its platform. The BBPS acknowledgement is particularly important as it confirms the payment was routed through the national bill payment system and accepted by the biller.

To find your Paytm payment receipt, open the app and navigate to the Passbook or Transaction History section. Find the relevant credit card bill payment and tap on it. The transaction detail screen shows the payment amount, the card issuer biller name, the date, the Paytm transaction ID, and the BBPS acknowledgement reference. Paytm also sends a confirmation SMS and in many cases an email to your registered contact details. The transaction detail screen can be screenshotted for record-keeping.

Payment receipt from Amazon Pay

For credit card bill payments made through Amazon Pay, the confirmation is displayed on the payment success screen within the Amazon app immediately after the transaction. The screen shows the payment amount, the biller name, and a BBPS acknowledgement number. Navigate to the Amazon Pay section of the app and select Your Transactions or Payment History to find the record of any past credit card bill payment. Each transaction entry shows the full details and can be screenshotted. Amazon also sends a confirmation email to your registered Amazon account email address, which serves as a durable digital receipt.

Payment receipt from official bank mobile apps

For payments made directly through a bank's own mobile banking app — such as HDFC Bank's mobile app, ICICI Bank's iMobile Pay, SBI's YONO app, or Axis Bank's Axis Mobile — the payment receipt is found within the app's transaction history section.

In most bank apps, after a successful credit card bill payment, a confirmation screen is displayed showing the transaction reference number, the source account, the credit card account, the amount, and the date and time. This screen should be screenshotted at the time of payment. If you did not capture it then, navigate to the app's transaction history or statement section, find the relevant debit entry for the credit card payment, and tap on it to access the full transaction details.

For HDFC Bank, the mobile banking app and net banking portal both allow users to view and download account statements, which include all credit card bill payments as debit entries with transaction reference numbers. The HDFC credit card section of the app may also show payment history directly on the card account view.

For ICICI Bank's iMobile Pay, the transaction history within the credit card section of the app shows all payments made, including the reference number and date. ICICI Bank also sends a payment confirmation SMS to the registered mobile number.

For SBI Card payments made through the SBI Card app or YONO, the payment confirmation is available in the transaction history section of the respective app. SBI Card also sends a confirmation message to the registered mobile number.

Payment receipt via email confirmation

Most banks and payment platforms send a payment confirmation email to the registered email address at the time of a successful credit card bill payment. This email typically contains the transaction reference number, the payment amount, the card account details, and the date of payment. Searching your inbox for the card issuer's name or the word receipt or payment confirmation will surface these emails quickly.

These email confirmations are widely accepted as proof of payment by banks, credit card issuers, and tax authorities, and they have the advantage of being automatically timestamped and stored in your email account without any manual action required at the time of payment.

Payment receipt from bank account SMS alerts

When a credit card bill payment is debited from your bank account via UPI, IMPS, NEFT, or direct bank transfer, your bank sends an SMS alert to your registered mobile number confirming the debit. This SMS contains the amount debited, the date and time, the mode of payment, and a partial transaction reference. While not a formal receipt in the way a BBPS acknowledgement is, an SMS debit alert combined with a UPI transaction ID or bank reference number is sufficient for most payment tracing purposes.

Save important payment SMS alerts by forwarding them to your email or taking a screenshot and storing it in a dedicated folder on your device.

Requesting a formal receipt from your credit card issuer

If you need a more formal acknowledgement of payment — for instance, for legal, tax, or compliance purposes — most credit card issuers can provide a payment confirmation letter or account statement showing the specific payment entry. Contact your card issuer's customer care helpline or visit a branch with your transaction reference number and request a written payment confirmation. Most issuers process such requests within five to seven working days.

For payments processed through BBPS, the BBPS acknowledgement number itself serves as a formally recognised transaction identifier within the national payment infrastructure, and is typically sufficient for all practical dispute and verification purposes.

Best practice: capture your receipt at the time of payment

The most reliable approach to maintaining payment records is to capture the confirmation at the moment of payment — screenshot the confirmation screen, note the transaction reference number, and save the confirmation SMS. Building this habit takes seconds and eliminates the need to retrieve records later under time pressure. Store payment confirmations in a clearly labelled folder on your device or a note-taking app, organised by month, so that any specific payment can be located quickly when needed.

Common questions about this topic.

The receipt or proof of payment depends on where you made the payment.
