How to Enable UPI Autopay Mandate: A Practical Guide to Recurring Payments
Managing recurring payments has always required either remembering due dates or setting up complex bank standing instructions. UPI Autopay changes this entirely by allowing users to authorise a one-time mandate that automatically debits a fixed or variable amount from their bank account at a scheduled interval. Whether you are paying for a streaming subscription, an insurance premium, a loan EMI, or a utility bill, UPI Autopay makes the process seamless and fully within your control.
What Is a UPI Autopay Mandate
A UPI Autopay mandate is a pre-authorised instruction that allows a merchant or service provider to collect payments from your bank account automatically at a defined frequency — daily, weekly, monthly, or annually — without requiring you to initiate each transaction manually. The mandate specifies the maximum amount that can be debited per cycle, the frequency, and the validity period. You retain full control and can pause, modify, or cancel the mandate at any time through your UPI application.
How UPI Autopay Works
When you sign up for a recurring service that supports UPI Autopay, the merchant sends a mandate creation request to your UPI application. You review the mandate details — amount, frequency, start date, and end date — and approve it using your UPI PIN. Once approved, the mandate is registered on the NPCI network. On each scheduled payment date, the merchant triggers a debit, and the amount is automatically transferred from your linked bank account, provided sufficient funds are available. You receive a notification for every debit, keeping you informed without requiring any action on your part.
How to Enable UPI Autopay on Stashfin
Enabling UPI Autopay on Stashfin is straightforward. When a supported merchant initiates a mandate request, you will receive it directly in the Stashfin app under your UPI section. Open the mandate request, review all the details carefully — particularly the maximum debit amount and frequency — and if everything is in order, approve it by entering your UPI PIN. The mandate becomes active immediately and will begin debiting on the scheduled dates. You can view all active mandates from the UPI section of the Stashfin app at any time.
Types of UPI Autopay Mandates
UPI Autopay supports two broad types of mandates. A fixed-amount mandate debits the same amount every cycle, making it ideal for fixed EMIs, insurance premiums, or flat-rate subscriptions. A variable-amount mandate allows the merchant to debit different amounts each cycle up to a pre-approved maximum, which is useful for utility bills or usage-based services where the amount changes month to month. When approving a variable mandate, pay close attention to the maximum debit cap to ensure it aligns with your expectations.
Pre-Debit Notification Requirement
For mandates above a certain threshold, NPCI guidelines require merchants to send a pre-debit notification to the user a set number of hours before the actual debit occurs. This gives users advance notice of the upcoming payment and an opportunity to ensure their account has sufficient funds. If you receive such a notification and want to stop a specific debit, you can do so through your UPI application before the debit window opens.
Managing Your Active UPI Autopay Mandates
Stashfin provides a clear view of all your active UPI Autopay mandates in the UPI section of the app. From here, you can see mandate details including the merchant name, debit amount or cap, frequency, and validity dates. You can pause a mandate temporarily if you want to stop a few cycles without cancelling entirely, or you can cancel a mandate permanently if you no longer need the service. Changes take effect for future cycles and do not affect any already-processed debits.
What Happens if a Mandate Debit Fails
If a scheduled mandate debit fails due to insufficient funds or a technical issue, the merchant may retry the debit as per their policy. Your UPI application will notify you of the failed debit so you can take corrective action — such as topping up your account — before the next retry. Repeated failed debits may result in the merchant suspending the service associated with the mandate, so it is good practice to maintain adequate balance in your linked account on expected debit dates.
Security Considerations for UPI Autopay
UPI Autopay is designed with strong security controls. Every new mandate requires explicit approval with your UPI PIN, so no recurring debit can be set up without your consent. You are notified for every debit transaction, and you retain the ability to cancel any mandate at any time. Never approve a mandate request from an unknown or unverified source. If you receive an unexpected mandate request that you did not initiate, decline it immediately and report it through the Stashfin app.
UPI transactions are governed by NPCI guidelines. Stashfin is an RBI-registered NBFC. Please ensure transaction details are correct before confirming payment.
